
But boffins at the University of Lisbon have revealed that not only is the universe ending, but they have a pretty good idea of WHEN it might actually happen.
According to New Scientist, the universe is expanding at an ever-increasing rate.
If this acceleration stays constant, the stars will eventually die, everything will drift apart and the universe will cool down and end.
Another reassuring possibility is that the amount of dark energy — the mysterious stuff present in the entire universe — will increase and expand to a point where the universe tears itself apart and ceases to exist.
To try to find out when this Big Rip might happen, scientist Diego Sáez-Gómez and his team modelled the expansion of the universe — and found that the earliest it may occur is 1.2 times the current age of the universe.
So mark your calendar 2.8 billion years from now — the end is coming.
